Maintenance
If you follow our recommendations for fertilising and watering Village Green requires minimal maintenance.
Organic amendment
Incorporate a 25mm layer of compost into the surface 50mm of the soil prior to laying your Village Green This organic matter will dramatically improve both water and nutrient holding capacity of the soil and speed the establishment.
Watering
Village Green can be established in the cooler months with minimal water (depending on rainfall). It is important that the soil is watered regularly during establishment.
Village Green will establish a deep root system very quickly and will be established within 4 weeks.
Generally Village Green laid onto amended soil will only require to be watered once per day during the early phase of establishment period (in extremely hot weather two waterings maybe required).
After 14 days from laying, the roots have generally “pegged” down and the watering frequency can be gradually reduced.
Once established, do not over water, once/twice a week in the summer and once per week in autumn and spring will be sufficient in most areas (this is rainfall and temperature dependant).
Village Green is very hardy and drought tolerant.
DO NOT OVER WATER
Fertilising
Village Green should only be fertilised in the period from April through to September. Only enough fertiliser needs to be applied to keep the Village Green green and active during these cooler months and then no fertiliser needs to be applied during the warmer months.
DO NOT OVER FERTILISE
Mowing
In the warmer months mow every 7 to 10 days at around 20-25 mm. If the turf gets spongy set the mower on the lowest setting and cut the lawn back. It will look brown but let it grow back and then keep mowing at 20- 25mm. Use a reel or rotary mower.
Mow every 2 weeks in the spring and autumn and less in the winter. If the lawn gets frosted the tips will turn brown. When this happens give it a light mowing to remove the brown tips and the lawn will be green underneath.
Renovation
If your lawn maintains a spongy feel then renovate using a vertimower during the summer period.
